Rice paper batik watercolor art is a unique technique where hot wax is used in combination with watercolor paint to produce an art picture with a stained glass like appearance. In rice paper batik art, similar to batik silk fabric art, each color tone is applied to the somewhat fragile rice paper and is protected from “bleeding” into neighboring colors by applying hot wax that sets and keeps color values separate.
This process requires several applications of alternating watercolors and wax. In the final step all wax is removed by “ironing” the art work between layers of newspaper that absorbs and removes the wax.
Kurt Jarvis has had a lifetime interest in the arts. In prior years he worked in porcelain clay, modeling miniature wildlife sculptures that were featured for many years at Longwood Botanical Gardens, Pa. Formerly a school social worker and art and crafts teacher in NJ, he now teaches art locally for his area active adult lifelong learning organization and through churches and community centers in his area.
