WADING CLAMS
Nancy West
$1200
Oil on panel
Size: 16" H, 20" Wide. Artwork is not framed.
Wading clams is a vanishing way of harvesting seafood. A waterman dons a tough, canvas-like bootie that can withstand cuts from shells but is thin enough to enable the waterman to feel clams in the mud with his feet. Once a clam is found, he digs it out with his foot and carefully moves it up his leg with that foot until he can reach the clam with his hands and put in into a sack in the boat. One cannot help but wonder how cold that fisherman must get after hours in water up to his chest. Earning a living on the water certainly isn't for the faint of heart! I was lucky enough to photograph this Chincoteague waterman several years ago when I was out in a friend's boat.

Delivery: Local pickup or shipped for $25 extra.
