Plein Air Art Show
Donna Stufft
Donna Stufft learned to sew when she was 12, becoming a traditional quilter in her 20's. At 47, through an exploration of trial and error, she began to combine painting with her quilting, creating one-of-a-kind art quilts. Each piece begins as an acrylic painting on cotton fabric. After layering with batting and backing, rayon threads are used to add detail, texture, and more color through free-motion thread-sketching with her sewing machine. Donna has lived 20 minutes from Chincoteague and Assateague for 12 years, and much of her artwork since then has been inspired by the beauty that surrounds her here on "the shore". She displays her work locally and regionally, and also lectures and teaches workshops, sharing her passion for her art and the techniques she's come up with to create her art quilts.

FISHING THE CREEK Donna Stufft $135 Fiber/Acrylic - 7" H, 5" W Matted and Framed Total: 10" H, 8" W I'm a birder, and enjoy seeing the variety of birds on Assateague. This egret was fascinating to watch and paint as he calmly held his pose while waiting for his early morning meal! I loved the amazing varieties of GREEN in this vibrant setting! Questions? MEDITATION Donna Stufft $135 Fiber/Acrylic - 7" H, 5" W Matted and Framed Total: 10" H, 8" W Thursday morning after Isaias passed through, I visited Assateague and found this egret sitting motionless on a branch by the creek along the road to the beach. I couldn't resist the opportunity to paint him, and lost in his meditation, he obliged! Questions? [email protected] SOLD |
TWO SENTINELS OF ASSATEAGUE Donna Stufft $135 Fiber/Acrylic - 7" H, 5" W Matted and Framed Total: 10" H, 8" W I painted this particular ghost tree near the beach on Assateague for the CCA Plein Air once before. I wondered how long it would remain the same, and wasn't surprised that this year about 1/3 was missing from the top. The birds still love it though! After Isaias passed through, I visited the beach again, and was so glad that I had painted it when I did, because the heavy winds left it shorter than it was the week before. But together with the lighthouse by its side, it's still keeping watch. Questions? [email protected] Click to purchase |
WHITE RAINBOW OVER ASSATEAGUE Donna Stufft $135 Fiber/Acrylic - 7" H, 5" W Matted and Framed Total: 10" H, 8" W A Hallmark movie I saw last winter called Love Under the Rainbow mentioned rare 'white rainbows' which I'd never seen before! So when I went to the beach on Assateague last week and saw this beautiful natural phenomenon for myself while looking to the West—opposite the ocean—I simply had to paint it! Questions? ASSATEAGUE WILDLIFE Donna Stufft $135 Fiber/Acrylic - 7" H, 5" W Matted and Framed Total: 10" H, 8" W I visited Assateague when the island reopened after tropical storm Isaias and saw many ponies grazing, including this one which I painted, who was the closest to me. I love what I think of as this 'iconic' Assateague scene in the background. That morning was the first time a pony has been close enough for me to paint with a bit of detail! Questions? WHITE IBIS Donna Stufft $135 Fiber/Acrylic - 5" H, 7" W Matted and Framed Total: 8" H, 10" W The end of Shell Dr. in Chincoteague is a favorite painting spot of mine because of the interesting mix of live and dead trees, the beauty of the marsh, and the variety of birds that I see there. This year when I arrived I saw a species that was new to me! The bird looked like an ibis, but it was white with patches of brown -- my introduction to an immature WHITE ibis! I soon saw the rest of his flock feeding in the marsh.. and enjoyed painting the lush scene with the haunting ghost trees in the background. Questions? [email protected] SOLD |
