Plein Air Art Show
Nancy West
Living on Chincoteague Island has inspired the paintings of Nancy Richards West for almost 40 years. Wildlife, nature and the subtle beauty of the tidal marshes have provided her with subject matter to last a lifetime.
After years of studio painting, the thrill of painting en plein air lured her out of the studio and into the field, where she has spent many years capturing the fleeting effects of changing light, weather and seasons.

PORCH RAIL WHELK Nancy West $425 Oil on Linen - 10" H, 8" W Framed - Total: 14" H, 12" W Painting in the shade during a July heatwave requires finding a shady spot. So I placed this broken channel whelk shell on my railing and painted it. Questions? Email [email protected] Click to purchase |
FRUIT FLY Nancy West $385 Oil on Panel - 8" H, 10" W Framed - Total: 12" H 14" W When I decided to paint one of my favorite summer fruits, I did not anticipate having to ward off a hungry band of squirrels. While I was busy keeping my eye on the little furry thieves, a dragonfly landed without my noticing at first. When I saw it, I decided it added a nice accent. I did NOT paint the squirrels. MILES HANCOCK CARVING SHED Nancy West $550 Oil on Panel - 10" H, 8" W Framed - 14" x 12" Miles Hancock was a well respected Chincoteague carver and terrapin farmer (yes, a turtle man). His carving shed has been moved to The Museum of Chincoteague and restored, and this is a view of his work area. The frame is actually an antique and is the perfect choice for a painting that looks to the past. Questions? Email [email protected] Click to purchase |
THE LAUNDRESS Nancy West $125 Oil on Panel - 6" H, 6" W - Unframed Laundry day at my house and this dragonfly kept landing on the clothespins. So I painted her. She sat there nicely during the entire time it took me to execute this little, fun work of art. Questions? Email [email protected] SOLD |
AN OLD SLANT ON THINGS Nancy West $325 Oil on Panel - 10" H, 8" W - Unframed This was the old Gaul Store, which was one of the many neighborhood grocery stores on Chincoteague. It has not been open for 40 years, but many locals remember it well. It is settling into its environment and will most likely be demolished by a new owner. Another landmark that may disappear.
